Sejam bem-vindos a Cascais

Carlos Carreiras,
Presidente da Câmara Municipal de Cascais
Welcome to Cascais

It is with a tremendous sense of satisfaction that our jovial 647-old Town will play host to the Festival of the equally young European Rugby Veterans.
I have to admit that this Festival couldn`t have happened at a better time.

2011 has been a notable year for Cascais. With a long tradition of hosting major international events, our town has staged an extraordinary series of sporting events this year.
It`s no accident that so many organisers of different sports events from the four corners of the world have chosen Cascais to host their key events. Because Cascais can guarantee to surpass the expectations of even the most demanding clients.

This is also the guarantee that we offer to our illustrious guests of this year`s Festival: we`re going to raise the standards - in order to ensure that this year will be remembered as both the first and the best of all European Rugby Veterans Festivals.

Cascais` identity is inextricably linked to the Sea and Mountains around us. But we also have a long tradition of rugby that inclusively has delivered brilliant results at an international level, thus benefiting Portugal`s worldwide reputation.
When we talk about Rugby we`re also talking about work, strategy, global vision and teamwork. About excelling ourselves. Cascais implies all of the above.

I`m sure that you`ll find the perfect environment, talent and local enthusiasm here that will guarantee an excellent Rugby championship.

Carlos Carreiras,
Mayor of Cascais

We will be very honoured to welcome you all at the beautiful village of Cascais for the 1st European Veterans Rugby Association (EVRA) Festival to be held in September, 7-10.
While memorizing the spirit of rugby through the awarding of the Jeff Butterfield Memorial, we wiill provide you plenty of occasions for playing your beloved sport and moments of togetherness in a fantastic atmosphere and an amazing venue.

In spite of not being a mass sport, rugby is gaining considerable momentum in Portugal following the national squads´ first participation in a Rugby World Cup in France and renowned performances in the Sevens World Series.
But even before, Cascais had already a very strong word in Portuguese Rugby, matching in a excellent combination our enthusiastic way of living, welcoming tradition, touristic lifestyle and many other attributes with very competitive, successful and always delightful to watch rugby teams, making it the perfect venue for realizing the 1st EVRA Festival!

Rugby is not only a game. It is a Lifestyle! And Cascais perfectly embodies this understanding.
As the Cascais Veterans Chairman, I wish you all unforgettable days in our country and region!
Cheers!

Gonçalo Faria de Vasconcellos
(Cascais Rugby Vets Chairman)

Dear E.V.R.A. members,
Dear European Rugby Veterans,

New, legal and registered, European Veteran Rugby organisation has been founded to follow the ideals and principles of amateur rugby, the game we all have played years ago . . .
Sportsmanship, Fairness and Dedication were our ideals . . . we do not want that these will be forgotten, nobody but we ourselves can keep it “still going strong”.

Our intention is, following these ideals, to organize genuine European Festival with special flare of the customs of the Country, Region, Town that officially organises this big European event.
For the site for our first European Festival we chose Portugal, country with long  and impressive, not only rugby tradition, country that had organised also the biggest ever European Festival (in 2008 Madeira, organisers Porto Old Greens)).
Portugal with around 20 active veteran clubs/teams is one of the most developed European rugby countries, where the former rugby players are very well aware of the importance to be involved with veteran sports as such and so to remain “faithful” to our game of rugby.

E.V.R.A. European Festival in September 2011 in Cascais will be organised by Cascais Vintage Rugby RC and Sports travel agency Wesetit.
Cascais, costal and cosmopolitan town in the vicinity of the capital Lisbon, is one of the richest municipalities in Portugal. The former fishing village gained fame as a resort for Portuguese royal family in the late 19th and early 20th century.
Nowadays, it is popular vacation spot not only for both Portuguese and foreign tourists, but also for various sportsmen . .

Cascais is also one of the strongholds of Portuguese rugby.
European Veteran Rugby Association and Vintage Cascais Rugby RC are especially inviting veteran teams from so called “small rugby nations” to take part at this big Event and so to contribute to the real “European – Portuguese flair” that the organisers are hard working on  . . .
For “the best” Licor Beirao European Series Club - Event organiser there are special conditions for participating at Cascais European Festival . . . do not hesitate too long –  book in!

Fica aqui registado, o meu e o nosso agradecimento.
Bem hajam.

The Portuguese Rugby Union is proud to be associated with an event with the magnitude and quality – sportive and social – of this European Veterans Rugby Festival, at a time when the country needs to reestablish the basis of principles that have always characterized it, namely: the mobilization capacity, availability, affability and work, not always well cuddled by an adequate management / organizational staff.

We need to rise with the confidence that we can organize ourselves and organize events like this. That certainly resists and demonstrates how we risk even in the most difficult periods in which the weak is hiding and waiting for others to solve their problems.

That is not the case! On the contrary, confident on their professional capacity, the Organization has progressed to this Festival without fear and with the certainty that success rewards the audacity. It is this spirit that characterizes rugby people.

The Event will be attended by many foreign players who will realize what the Portuguese are able to do! When they want, and this Organization as well as all the Portuguese players want!
The Portuguese Rugby Union will support this initiative within the limits of their capabilities.
I’d like to express my personal and the Union gratitude!
Yours truly,

Carlos Amado da Silva
President of the FPR
